I established the first International Rhino Day back in 2000 as a way to help raise awareness & funds for the 5 remaining rhinos left on earth (all of which are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED)!!
Each year, in addition to simply using the day to help raise awareness & funds for rhinos, we also usually have a specific "agenda" (and action to take) for that year's International Rhino Day (See "Event Link" above for Agenda & Action) . . . This year, as the situation is now so dire, I feel our main agenda must be raising awareness regarding (and exposing) the practice of "Conservation via Killing" (see below for information) . . .
* NOTE: Although I have chosen the date of February 2nd (2/3) just so we have a reference point and a specific day to focus on rhinos and rhino education & conservation (and as a way for 2/3 to represent the 2 Asian species & 3 African species that make up the last 5 species of rhino), everyday is (and should be) "Rhino Day" as far as rhino education & conservation goes because, as I said, there are only 5 species of rhino left on earth and all 5 are critically endangered and threatened with imminent EXTINCTION if something drastic is not done to stop the main causes:
1) Poaching for Rhino Horn
2) Loss of Habitat
3) Practice of "Conservation via Killing" . . . *(See below for information)
There were once dozens of species of rhino all over the world - including those indigenous to the American Continent! . . . Now only 5 species remain (and ALL 5 are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED & THREATENED with EXTINCTION)!!
As mentioned earlier, the main reasons for this imminent extinction are: Poaching for Rhino Horn (mostly because of demand by the Asian Market), Loss of Habitat (due to human encroachment on what's left of their natural habitat - esp. clearing of forests in Asia for the Palm Oil Industry), and something I call "Conservation via Killing" . . .
Although I placed this last one in 3rd place, in my opinion, it has currently become the #1 reason the last 5 rhinos on earth will go extinct because of the nature of this practice . . .
CONSERVATION via KILLING: What is "Conservation via Killing," you wonder - Sounds contradictory, doesn't it? . . . And that's exactly what it is (and why it will be the #1 reason that rhinos go extinct, if we do not do something to change this senseless practice).
"Conservation via Killing" is the term I've given to the so-called "conservation groups" and organizations that allow the "controlled" hunting & killing of rhinos as a means to "raise funds for conservation." . . . The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) is the most prominent of these organizations (there are many others that partner with the WWF and also support Trophy Hunting).

As I said, although 2/3 is the official "International Rhino Day," we need to (and do) fight for the few remaining rhinos EVERYDAY! . . .
So, if you can't make it on 2/3, please DO stop by any/all of the links here and . . .
